African Hair Braiding Advice and Guidelines

Summertime and the living should be easy—especially when you decide to trade in your everyday style for a trendy African hair braid. Here’s what you need to know before deciding to try a new hairstyle. We’ve gathered some expert tips to help you enjoy your protective style with no strings attached.

1. Find the Right Salon
“When picking an African braiding salon or stylist, it’s important to know their professional experience,” say many braiders. With that, you can gauge their level of expertise and choose the right person for the particular hairstyle you’re seeking. The proof is always in the pudding. Ask yourself: Is this braider skilled? A great weaver or talented hair cutter? With hair styling, practice makes perfect, so make sure to check out some of their work and/or client testimonials on their Google reviews or Facebook page, as well as pictures of their hairstyles before sitting in the chair. As a customer, always ask the salon owner or receptionist for their stylist recommendations—they tend to know each stylist’s strengths and weaknesses.

2. Consider Your Hair Texture
“The most beautiful hair type for braids is thick, full black hair, as it can support the weight of the braids,” says one of the best natural hairstylists. “If your hair is fine, fragile, thin, short, or damaged, avoid hairstyles that might put weight on your hair or hairline, causing traction alopecia—a form of balding from tension on your hair.”

3. Choose the Right Hair Extensions
Nowadays, hair extensions are available in various textures such as Brazilian, Cambodian, European, Indian, Mongolian, and Peruvian. These types vary greatly, from straight, wavy, body wave, loose curls, spiral curls, deep waves, tight deep curls, to kinky curls. All virgin, unprocessed hair is generally available in off-black or brown colors, but can also be dyed to match your hair color or processed to color-treated hair.

4. Avoid Any Surprises
As a braider, you should always wash your extensions before installing them (especially for weaves) to reveal their true wave pattern, texture, and color. Extensions can change after washing, just like your natural hair does.

5. Set a Time Limit for Your Braids
Black braids should typically be left in for six weeks, with a possible retouch on your hairline after three weeks to keep it from thinning. If your scalp feels sensitive from any movement or if the base of your braids starts to lock up, it’s time to take them out. If your new growth reaches about ½ inch from your scalp, it’s time to remove the braids.

6. How to Care for Your Braids
Wash Your Braids Correctly:

Skip Conditioner:
Conditioners and conditioning masks can loosen braids, affecting their longevity. Instead, use hydrating shampoos and oil sprays for braided hairstyles.

Treat Your Scalp for Dryness:
For a dry or itchy scalp, apply a pre-shampoo oil treatment (also known as pre-poo) to your scalp, then place it under a steamer or heat for about 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, shampoo, and condition the braids. On a daily basis, use a light hair oil or serum to lubricate the scalp.

7. Keep Your Hair Hydrated
To keep your hair moisturized, mix 8 oz. of water with 3 tablespoons of Beautiful Textures Tangle Taming Leave-In Conditioner and 2 teaspoons of olive oil in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray as needed.
